“Induction Programme”

July 13 , 2009

BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong held a two-day Induction Programme for new Middle School & High School teachers on 10th and 13th of July 2009. The  Induction Programme is aimed to provide the new teachers insights to the school’s activity.

The Induction Programme was opened by Mr. Isaac Koh,  the Principal of Middle School & High School (MS/HS), BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong.

The first day of the Induction Programme covered topics including Duty of Care, Reflective Practices, and Counselling Skill.

The Duty of Care session was facilitated by Greg C. Mowday, the Education Consultant from the Widia Center of Excellence for Teaching and Learning (WiTeL).  In this workshop, the participants were asked to consider the nature of “Duty of Care” and how it varies with the student’s age, the location and circumstances of each activity.  Participants were brought to awareness that there is no transferability of duty of care.  This workshop also emphasised Duty of Care as it might be applied to assisting parents or external providers, and on managing a Duty of Care when on excursions and other events.

The Reflective Practice session was facilitated by Mariza Lardizabal, the Vice Principal Affective Education of MS/HS, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong. The participants were introduced to an appropriate self-evaluation practice using a reflective thinking model (e.g. Taggart). They were expected to apply reflective practice as a part of their commitment to self-development,and to promote the reflective thinking practices of  their students.  Teachers were encouraged  to maintain a Reflection Journal as a means to regularly reflect on the development of their teaching skills and on the development of their reflective practices.

The Counselling Skill session was facilitated by Indri Hapsari, the Head of Guidance & Counselling. During this session, participants were given practical examples on how to apply important skills, such as active listening, understanding body language, questioning, paraphrasing, note taking, and summarising.  The teachers were made aware on the importance of confidentiality, communication, referral, and the differences between friendship and familiarity in coaching and counselling.

On the second day of the Induction Programme, three topics were covered: Working in a Culturally-Diverse Environment, Classroom Management, and an Introduction to the National Curriculum and the International Status of BINUS School.

The ‘Working in a Culturally-Diverse Environment’ session was facilitated by Conor Sean Harron, a member of the MS/HS teaching staff. The participants were made aware that they need to demonstrate a knowledge, tolerance and respect for cultural diversity.  They were led to understand that behaviours and responses are frequently a product of culture, and cultural diversity implies different approaches to problems and issues. The new teachers were encouraged to work to instil cultural awareness, respect and tolerance in the classroom and among colleagues.

Classroom Management was facilitated by Satyawidya Wulansari, MS/HS Subject Head and Subject Teacher (Humanities & Social Science). Participants in this session were introduced to the daily practices of classroom management in MS/HS and were given a number of practical and proven strategies for classroom management, and their application to both predictable and unpredictable classroom situations. They were introduced to a series of broad parameters about which behaviour modification could occur. The participants were encouraged to engage in peer support and share strategies with their colleagues.

The National Curriculum and International Status of BINUS School session was facilitated by Devi Gunawan, the National Curriculum Coordinator.  The participants were introduced to the broad requirements of the National Curriculum in a national school and as it applied in Binus International School Serpong. The teachers were led to an awareness of the link between the National Curriculum and Indonesian university entrance. A lengthy discussion focused on the significance of the National Curriculum to Serpong parents and students in the School’s cultural and social context.
